The Beauty of Clay

Clay can be so beautiful it seems almost a shame to cover it in glaze.

This elegant fire bowl is a wonderful example of clay revealing its beauty through simplicity. As the clay begins it’s metamorphosis it is compacted and polished to a high sheen.

After being bisque fired it is then placed in flames, the shapes and colours you see are burned onto the pot by the flames of the fire. The final touch is to coat the clay in wax and polish until it reveals its natural beauty.

I also use this technique on some of my sculptures and the effect is quite dazzling, similar to bronze but in some ways almost better than bronze. Simple, elegant, beautiful.
